Everyone loves a Football game!

But there-in lies the problem. One of our more popular bars had seven Flatscreen TV’s on which we showed NFL football games every Sunday. We are in a city with a NFL team and so on gamedays, everyone was tuned in to the local team. Our staff always wanted us to have all kinds of gameday discounts with half price beers, discounted wings and nacho’s, dollar off everything and giveaways. They of course were looking for folks to come in and eat and drink and in theory, leave them a big tip. The problem was, that by the time we discounted everything and gave everything away, we weren’t making any money. Plus, we were competing with 1000 bars in the area who were all trying to give the most things away to attract the biggest crowds. So nobody was winning the game. Everyone was discounting all of their best items in the hopes of having a good crowd.

However, here’s what we decided to do that changed things for us. My two sons and my son-in-law are all Premier league Soccer fans. Or as they say all over the world; Football. The Premier league, which is based in the UK, plays every Saturday and Sunday for ¾ of the year. Because the games are in the UK, they start at 6:00 AM and run till early afternoon. About the time that the NFL games begin. Because there were only 3 other bars showing Premier League Soccer in the metro area and none within ten miles of us, we had a captive audience. Additionally, there are Fan clubs for a lot of the teams and so when we would have the Manchester United games on, the fan club would show up with ten to 16 people. We decided to offer three food specials, a Proper English breakfast with an egg, beans, tomato, Irish bacon, and potatoes, Fish and Chips, and fabulous Bangers and Mash. We had Guinness on draft and a few other beers to make the folks feel at home. One bartender, One cook and a manager to keep an eye on things. One fan club supported us so much, that we let them hang their banner over the bar. I went on line and bought a half dozen jerseys and had the staff wear them for the games to set the mood. The Fans of Premier League Soccer are well connected and they let other fan clubs know that we were there, especially after they had a great meal and experience. For additional fun, because the games tend to be low scoring, we offered a free beer if the team scored more than three goals. Didn’t happen often, but it kept the fans in their seats.

The games were always changing and so we had to decide who we were showing and post that schedule. But the best part was that we weren’t competing for traffic like we would for NFL games. And, we didn’t have to discount anything. Finally, because it was before our regular brunch service started, we moved right from the early games into Brunch service. There are a number of Leagues. The German Bundesliga, the Italian League and many other leagues. There is a large following in the Hispanic leagues. So perhaps you want to create a Football Fiestas every Saturday and Sunday. Breakfast Tacos or Quesadillas. Don’t fight the crowds of NFL bars and the millions of discounts. Get up a little early and beat the competition to the goal. And have fun, mate!
